Lewis Supports Good Jobs for Pennsylvania Package to Help Career and Technical Education Statewide

Lawmakers, students and supporters of improving workforce development programs rallied in Harrisburg on Monday to acknowledge the successful passage of a Good Jobs for Pennsylvania package of legislation by the full House. The 11-bill package would help match up interested students and individuals with the best training for their career paths. The bipartisan, career and technical education (CTE) package includes measures to address workforce shortages in business and industry, strengthen educational partnerships with employers, increase access to career oriented technical training and alleviate misperceptions regarding vocational education programs. Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) said he is an avid supporter of the package of legislation.

Rep. Lewis Introduces Term Limits Plan to Bring New Choices, New Voices to State Government

Freshman state lawmakers Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) and Mike Jones (R-York) unveiled their proposal on Tuesday to enact term limits for members of the state House and Senate. The measure seeks to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to limit a member of the General Assembly to 12 consecutive years of service in each chamber. That equates to six consecutive two-year terms for House members and three consecutive four-year terms for senators. The lawmakers expressed their believe that the change would help improve the legislative environment in both chambers. Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) said the term limits amendment would help to restore a culture where elected office is viewed as more of a public service than a career choice.

The House of Representatives was in session Tuesday in the state capitol and members had the opportunity to attend Governor Wolf’s inauguration ceremony for his second term. In his speech, the Governor struck a conciliatory note and called for increased spirit of cooperation between the General Assembly and the administration. Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) said he was impressed with the Governor’s optimistic message and is looking forward to hearing what he will propose in the upcoming state budget address.

Members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives were sworn in Tuesday in Harrisburg with the members taking the oath of office in the House chamber at noon to officially begin the 2019-20 legislative session. Republicans hold a 110-93 majority in the House with 19 newly elected Republican members. This is the fifth consecutive term that Republicans have retained majority control of the PA House. Rep.
