Lewis Announces $582,000 in State Grants for Railroad Upgrades
HARRISBURG – Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) today announced that ArcelorMittal and the Brandywine Valley Railroad will receive $582,000 for necessary upgrades to the rail lines in state grants through the Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP). The grants will pay for 70 percent of the projects.

The funding will be used to upgrade the intersections of rail lines, which is necessary to move trains from one track to another. The current intersections, called turnouts, have exceeded their useful life.

“Not only is the condition of the turnouts inconveniencing passengers with operational delays, it is causing safety concerns with the transport of hazardous materials,” Lewis said. “I understood the magnitude of the issues being caused by the worn out turnouts and am thankful that I was able to help secure these grants.”

The RFAP provides financial assistance for investment in rail freight infrastructure. The intent of the program is to preserve essential rail freight service where economically feasible and preserve or stimulate economic development through the generation of new or expanded rail freight service.
