Lewis Honors Local Star Athletes in House Chamber
HARRISBURG – This week, Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) recognized Coatesville High School runners in the House chamber for their many triumphs, including claiming the state championship title.

“Victory like these young men have achieved does not happen without dedication and hard work – talent is not enough,” Lewis said. “By focusing on their goals each day, they created success that should make them proud for the rest of their lives.”

Seniors Terrance Laird and Jayland Washington visited the Capitol to be honored. Aaron Young and Eric Kirk, sophomores, could not attend. Together, the four became the state champions and the only team to run under 42 seconds, broke three invitational meet records and set the stadium record at Downingtown East. They are District 1 and Ches-Mont champions, as well as school record holders.

Laird also has a long list of accomplishments as an individual runner, including winning first place in the Boys’ 200-Meter Dash event during the 2016-17 Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Track and Field Championships. He holds school records in the 55-, 60-, 200- and 300-meter dash events and the 800-meter relay event. Laird is ranked first in the state and sixth in the nation in the 200- and 300-meter dash events. He also holds the second-fastest time in the indoor 200-meter dash in the history of the Commonwealth and was nominated as a candidate for the Pennsylvania Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The young men were coached by Damien Henry and Paul Hadzor.

House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), Terrance Laird, Jayland Washington, Damien Henry and Paul Hadzor gather in the House chamber after Rep. Harry Lewis (R-Chester) spoke about their many achievements.
