Lewis Supports Budget that Favors Education, Reduces Government
HARRISBURG – Today, Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) voted for a $32 billion budget that invests in quality education for Commonwealth children. The budget would award an additional $100 million to basic education funding and $25 million each to special education and Pre-K Counts.

“Even in difficult financial times, the children of the Commonwealth cannot be faced with cuts to the education they need. While this budget contains less than $200 million in additional spending when compared to last year’s budget, $150 million more is dedicated to education funding,” Lewis said. “Rightfully so, it is being treated as a top priority.”

Also included in the budget is a proposal to merge several agencies in an effort to eliminate government redundancies while still providing for the needs of Pennsylvanians as reflected through their individual missions.

The Department of Human Services and the Department of Health would be merged, and the Department of Corrections would be combined with Probation and Parole.

The bill now advances to Gov. Tom Wolf for consideration.

To produce the budget’s revenue package, the Legislature will reconvene next week.
