Lewis Welcomes Gov. Tom Wolf to Coatesville
Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) joined Gov. Tom Wolf and Carver Court resident Jane Kennedy in celebrating the housing project that impacted countless African-Americans in the last sixty years.
HARRISBURG – As a resident of Carver Court for many years, Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) welcomed Gov. Tom Wolf and others to a ceremony revealing the historical marker noting the neighborhood’s significance.

The public housing project in Caln Township has impacted African-American history, housing African-American workers of Lukens Steel factory and their families.

“What stood out to me during the years I lived in Carver Court, what struck me most was the strong sense of community. The people made it a special place to live, and one of those people was instrumental in adding Carver Court to the National Register,” Lewis said. “Without the work of Jane Kennedy, a Carver Court resident, the neighborhood would not have been recognized for its architectural and cultural significance.”

Wolf and Lewis presented certificates to Caln Township commissioners Jennifer Breton and John Contento. Scott Huston, Gene DiOrio and Jim Ziegler, all representatives of Lukens Steel and The Graystone Society, congratulated the residents of Carver Court. Coatesville Area School District Superintendant Dr. Cathy Taschner, Caln Township Police Chief Joseph Elias and Joan Ciarlone of the Old Caln Historical Society also recognized the importance of Carver Court.

The ceremony opened with prayer from Pastor Jeannette McNeill from New Hope Glad Tidings Church of God, which is the church located in Carver Court, and benediction was given by the Rev. Dr. Gradis M. Eggleston, Jr. of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Coatesville.
