Lewis Announces Nearly $800,000 in Education Grants for Chester County
HARRISBURG – Rep. Harry Lewis Jr. (R-Chester) ) today announced the awarding of nearly $800,000 to benefit Chester County, which was made available through Adult Basic Education Direct Service grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) was provided $598,041, and the YWCA in the Tri-County Area received $201,250.

“Literacy and a dedication to learning is the greatest equalizer, giving everyone opportunities to pursue financial independence and a better life,” Lewis said. “It is important to assist adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills as it benefits the whole community.”

Adult Basic Education Direct Service grants are designed to provide adult education and literacy activities by creating a partnership between the federal government, states and localities.

Funding can be used to promote skills necessary for attaining a secondary school diploma or employment, becoming full partners in the educational development of children and acquiring an understanding of the American system of government.
